FINAL FOUR BOUND! babyÖ±²¥app Men's Soccer Defeats Maryville
The babyÖ±²¥app University men's soccer team defeated Maryville 3-2 in the NCAA DII Elite Eight at Key Stadium Sunday (Dec. 3) to advance to the third final four in program history. TEAM RECORDS (7) babyÖ±²¥app 13-3-6 | (8) Maryville 12-4-6 LEWIS LEADERS Goals: Arturs Gorodnickis (Riga, Latvia/Riga) (2), Joram Bogers (Tilburg, Netherlands/Mill-Hill College) (1) Assists: Bogers (1), Justin Darlage (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) (1), Gorodnickis (1), Mikey Revell (Largo, Maryland/Bishop McNamara) (1) Shots: Bogers (5), Gorodnickis (2) Shots on goal: Bogers (3), Gorodnickis (2) Saves: Sebastian Doppelhofer (Liebmannweg, Austria/Kapfenberg) (7) HALF BREAKDOWN FIRST HALF: babyÖ±²¥app 1, Maryville 0 Maryville had the first two scoring chances of the contest after creating some space, but Doppelhofer was able to record saves on both shots. Bogers recorded the first shot for the Flyers but it was off target. babyÖ±²¥app broke through in the 18' after Bogers found Gorodnickis for the goal to go up 1-0. Bogers looked to quickly make it 2-0, but his kick went out right. The Saints looked to tie it up a few minutes later in the 33' but Doppelhofer recorded the save. Towards the end of the first half, Maryville had a scoring chance in the 44' after driving the field but Doppelhofer picked up the save. SECOND HALF: babyÖ±²¥app 2, Maryville 2 Marco Holzer (Kapfenberg, Austria/BORG Kapfenberg) wasted no time to start the second half, looking to make it 2-0 Flyers in the opening minutes, but his shot was saved. Maryville had a scoring chance after booting a corner kick in but its shot in the 50th minute was saved. Bogers looked to double the Flyers' lead after driving the field in the 55' with a pair of shots, but Maryville's goalie saved one and the other was off target. Charles Carlback (Karlskrona, Sweden/FK Karlskrona) tried to increase the lead for babyÖ±²¥app in the 62' but his shot went out right. The Saints had another scoring chance in the 64' but their shot went out left. The Flyers were able to double its lead after Bogers recorded a shot, got the rebound, passed to Gorodnickis who then sent the ball back to Bogers to find the back of the net and make it 2-0. Maryville played from down two to try cut the deficit in half in the 69th minute but Doppelhofer saved it. The Saints were able to break through in the 70' to make it 2-1 babyÖ±²¥app. Moments later, Darlage found Gorodnickis in the 76' for his second goal of the match, which made it 3-1 babyÖ±²¥app. Maryville did not give up, as six minutes later the Saints recorded its second goal of the day to make it 3-2 Flyers. babyÖ±²¥app was able to hang tough on defense the last eight minutes as Maryville recorded another pair of shots, including one on target in the last minute of action, but Doppelhofer scooped up the save. FINAL SCORE: babyÖ±²¥app 3, Maryville 2 UP NEXT babyÖ±²¥app will be back in action for the NCAA DII Final Four against reigning national champion Franklin Pierce in Matthews, NC Thursday (Dec. 7) starting at 4 p.m. CT.
