Dr. Elizabeth Sartell
Dr. Elizabeth Sartell, assistant professor in the Theology department at babyÖ±²¥app University, received a for her project, “Calligraphy & Creativity in the Classroom.” The grant will provide funding to incorporate arts-based experiential learning into her classroom.
The $5,000 grant will be used to fund student learning through introductory Islamic art projects that will help them think about Islamic art historically, critically, and artistically.
enhances and strengthens teaching in theology and religion in North American colleges, universities, and theological schools. They support faculty to improve teaching and learning practices in and beyond the classroom.
Sartell is part of the 2023 Wabash Workshop for Early Career Religion Faculty Teaching Undergraduates. The Workshop creates a collaborative learning experience that focuses on building a community around teaching and learning, all while reflecting on outside realities that shape educational environments for faculty and students.
Sartell also presented a paper entitled “Mystical Calligraphy: Writing Across Worlds” at the on Nov. 18-21. At the annual national conference, the Islamic Studies scholar shared her research on how the calligraphic or written forms of Arabic letters are interpreted symbolically.
