babyÖ±²¥app Women's Volleyball Season Ends with 3-2 Defeat Against Rockhurst in NCAA DII First Round

Published: November 30, 2023.

The No. 3 seed babyÖ±²¥app University women's volleyball team fell to No. 6 Rockhurst in five sets Thursday (Nov. 30) in the NCAA Division-II Midwest Regional Quarterfinals. The 3-2 defeat marks the end of the Flyers' 2023 season.

"It was a good match, a lot of ups and downs," head coach  said postgame.

When asked about this year's senior class, Smith described them as a "really good group," and added, "any coach would be lucky to have them."

Both teams' defenses controlled the match, with 120 digs by both sides, nine blocks for babyÖ±²¥app and seven blocks by Rockhurst. Smith said that defensive intensity was one of the factors behind the Flyers' 26 attack errors.

"You'll try to be more aggressive, try to swing to an area that your teammates told you was open, but maybe in that particular situation the set didn't give you that swing," Smith said. "I think some of our errors came because we were actually trying (so hard) to score, which is what you should be doing."

SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: Rockhurst 26, babyÖ±²¥app 24
Rockhurst started fast, gaining a 4-1 lead but babyÖ±²¥app later surged ahead with a 4-0 run featuring three kills to take a 14-12 lead and forcing the Hawks to call timeout.

The timeout did little to slow down the Flyers, who scored three more points including a kill and block by Ray to make the lead 17-12, and drawing Rockhurst's second timeout of the frame.

babyÖ±²¥app scored one more point after the second timeout, but then the Hawks came charging with an 8-3 push to trim the deficit to one. The Flyers reached set point at 24-21, but Rockhurst then scored five consecutive points to take set one.

Set 2: babyÖ±²¥app 27, Rockhurst 25
The Hawks once again went ahead early, starting set two with a 3-0 run. babyÖ±²¥app took six of the next eight points, including four kills, to take a 6-5 lead.

After the teams traded 3-0 runs, the set remained close until the Flyers pushed ahead with a 6-2 stretch featuring four kills, capped off by a service ace by Gubera, to secure a 17-14 advantage.

Back-to-back kills by Ray and Alvey made it 19-15 babyÖ±²¥app, but Rockhurst took seven of the next 10 points to tie it at 22. The teams then traded points until it was 25-all, when Stenman and Schlechte recorded two straight kills to win the set for the Flyers.

Set 3: Rockhurst 25, babyÖ±²¥app 19
Set three started with back-and-forth action, with the score tied at one, two and three points each. From there, the Flyers went on a 6-2 charge with Ray providing three kills and an ace during the run.

After a Rockhurst timeout, the Hawks came flying back with a 9-4 push to grab a 14-13 lead. Later, a 3-0 babyÖ±²¥app run put the Flyers back on top, but a 9-2 charge by Rockhurst gave the Hawks the set win.

Set 4: babyÖ±²¥app 25, Rockhurst 22
Rockhurst went up 3-1 early, but babyÖ±²¥app showed its resolve with a 9-0 run featuring three kills and three blocks to take the 10-3 advantage. The Flyers kept pushing forward, extending the lead all the way to nine points at 18-9.

The Hawks weren't done, however. A 3-0 run by Rockhurst closed the gap, and later Rockhurst took four consecutive points to cut the deficit to 22-19.

After babyÖ±²¥app reached set point at 24-20, the Hawks took the next two points before a kill by Van Loo sent the match to set five.

Set 5: Rockhurst 15, babyÖ±²¥app 10
Rockhurst pounced at the start of set five, taking the first six points on five kills and a block. The Hawks pushed the lead to 8-1 when the teams switched sides.

Later in the set, the Flyers used a 3-0 run to trim the deficit to 11-8 and force Rockhurst to use a timeout. Unfortunately for babyÖ±²¥app, that was the closest the score would get the rest of the way. The Hawks secured the last two points of the match on a kill and an attack error by the Flyers.
