President David Livingston Joins IALU in African Higher Education Planning Meeting
Published: November 20, 2023.
Dr. David Livingston, president of babyÖ±²¥app University, was among the members and representatives of the International Association of Lasallian Universities (IALU) who recently met and toured parts of Africa to learn about the need for expanded opportunities for higher education on the continent. The Lasallian network of schools currently serves more than 80 countries worldwide.
On the trip, the IALU team met with leaders, faculty, staff and students from the Ethiopian Catholic University – Lasalle and the Lasalle College of Education, Science and Technology Nairobi. Also, Livingston met with two babyÖ±²¥app University Alumni, Brother Moses Abunya and Brother Getachew Nadew, graduates of babyÖ±²¥app University’s doctoral program in Educational Leadership.
Livingston has served as regional representative of North America, Bethlehem and English-speaking Africa Region on the IALU Board, and in March of 2019 was voted vice president by the same board.
Throughout history, higher education has expanded in various countries around the world as the population changed and needs became apparent. Africa currently has the youngest population in the world.
Livingston said, “The sense from the Superior General of the Christian Brothers in Rome is that Africa will be the place where education needs will expand most rapidly in the coming years.”
"," a United Nations article stated “Africa has the youngest population in the world, with 70 percent of sub-Saharan Africa under the age of 30. Such a high number of young people is an opportunity for the continent’s growth – but only if these new generations are fully empowered to realize their best potential. It is especially important that young people are included in decision making and given appropriate opportunities for work and to innovate.”
